Search Engine Optimisation (SEO to its friends)

Search engine optimisation is a bit of a dark art - in fact the practitioners of it call themselves either black hat or white hat SEO specialists depending on whether what they're doing is approved of by the search engines (e.g Google, Yahoo, Bing etc) or not.

At Bread & Butter Marketing we feel that, while it's worth making it possible for search engines to understand what your site is about and making it easy to find, it's actually far more important to design your site to make it useful for your real live human visitors. In reality, the search engines want to rank websites highly that actual people find useful because that keeps their own customers happy - no one would use Google if they couldn't find what they were after quickly. Therefore, their algorithms favour sites which are easy to navigate, load quickly, do what they say they'll do, and generally just are relevant to their audience.

That said, many sites have been set up in such a way that Google doesn't even really know they exist, or if they do they have problem working out what they're about due to very basic features not being implemented. We can advise you as to whether your site is OK or not and help you improve it if necessary.

However, please know that we absolutely DO NOT guarantee that "we'll get your site to number 1 on Google". This is an impossibility for anyone to do, and if someone offers it to you, run a mile - they'll likely be charging you the earth to implement practices that Google et al do not approve of. Not only will you be wasting your money, you'll possibly end up having your site removed from Google altogether, as famously happened to BMW a while back for just this reason.

What we WILL do is advise you about the general 'usability' of your site for your human visitors, as well as making sure there are no barriers to the search engines finding you.
